Recognition
Does your concrete look like this?
These are the conditions that most often turn out to be a surface problem rather than a slab problem.
- Sun-faded, chalky grey concrete
- Tyre marks and oil staining on the driveway
- An old paint or coating that's flaking off
- A pool surround that's gone smooth and slippery
- Rough, pitted or worn surface texture
- Fine surface cracking, but a slab that hasn't moved
- A dated stencil or pattern from decades ago
- Paths and courtyards that look tired next to the house

Suitability
When resurfacing makes sense
Resurfacing works with the slab you already have. That only works if the slab is still doing its job.
When resurfacing makes sense
- Faded, stained or weathered surfaces
- Dated finishes and old stencil patterns
- Worn driveways and rough surface texture
- Minor surface imperfections and stable minor cracking
- Old or failing surface coatings
- Slippery pool surrounds, paths and steps
When repair or replacement may make more sense
- Significant slab movement or subsidence
- Serious structural cracking, or sections at different heights
- Badly broken, crumbling or delaminating concrete
- Persistent moisture or drainage problems
- Areas where the slab was never suitable for its current use
The condition of the underlying slab matters. A site inspection can determine whether resurfacing is appropriate or whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Quick decision guidance
A short version of the question most homeowners are actually asking.
The surface looks bad
Faded, stained, dated or worn, but level and stable underfoot. Resurfacing is usually worth considering first.
The surface is failing
Old coatings peeling, surface pitting or fine cracking. Often still resurfaceable, but preparation and repair drive the scope.
The slab is failing
Movement, height differences, wide active cracks or crumbling concrete. Repair or replacement is the honest answer.

Why preparation matters
Good resurfacing starts underneath the finish.
A resurfacing system can only perform as well as the surface it's bonded to. Grinding can remove failing coatings and create a suitable surface for the new system to bond to. Cleaning removes oil, grit and organic growth that would otherwise sit between the old concrete and the new finish.
Coating over poor preparation is the most common reason a resurfaced driveway lifts, peels or patches out a year or two later. It's also the part of a quote that's easiest to leave out to look cheaper.

Newcastle's harbour edge — concrete, salt air and weathered steel have long been part of the landscape here.
Newcastle & the Hunter
Concrete that has had a hard life outdoors
Plenty of Newcastle homes were built when a plain grey slab was simply what you got. Decades of sun, salt air, rain and vehicle traffic later, those driveways, paths and pool surrounds look tired long before the concrete underneath gives up.
Around the older suburbs you see the same pattern repeatedly — sun-faded driveways on sloping blocks, patios with a failing paint coating, pool surrounds that have gone smooth and slippery. In most of those cases the slab still has good bones.
